An Inside Look into Backend Development At Objective

Learn why a development career at Objective is a rewarding experience

I work as a Senior Back-end Developer with the Objective Connect product. In a nutshell, I’m responsible for building back-end services which are secure, fast and resilient. We collaboratively build quality components which are continuously integrated and delivered, which includes an in-depth monitoring system with self-healing software components.

So, what does my role entail? On a daily basis, I:

  • Collaborate with product owners and development managers to understand the requirements of a new feature and prepare detailed design documents and estimates
  • Write fully testable software code and loosely coupled micro-services
  • Write Unit Tests and perform peer to peer code reviews
  • Keep code repositories continuously integrated and always ready for release to the production environment

Apart from new features, I also work on reducing technical debt, fixing bugs, refactoring code, and keeping technical components up to date.

At the moment, I’m working on the next version of Objective Connect’s document rendition service, which enables our customers to view and interact with documents on-screen without having to download them. The new version is a big step forward in the rendition experience, and it’s exciting to see an improved user experience come to life.

The most rewarding parts of the job

There are so many things that I find rewarding! In terms of technical rewards, we have been effectively using, improving, and evolving the agile culture at Objective, which is why we can ship a new feature or bug fix to customers as quickly as possible. We have reduced our release cycles from one in a few months to almost one in two weeks, which means every other week we are delivering cool capabilities to our customers without downtime.

Aside from these technical rewards, I find knowing how the product is enabling our customers to do their business effectively and efficiently very rewarding. Hearing customer success stories and their appreciation for the product that I build really hits home.

Objective always encourages us to learn and grow. As a technical member of the team, I’m encouraged to learn and try different tools and practices, which gives me hands-on experience with the most cutting-edge technologies in the market.

Learning and growth opportunities at Objective

Objective always encourages us to learn and grow. As a technical member of the team, I’m encouraged to learn and try different tools and practices, which gives me hands-on experience with the most cutting-edge technologies in the market.

Every other week, we have ‘Innovate Fridays’ when we can take a break from our day-to-day activities and individually spend time on a tool, feature or idea of our choice. We also have access to LinkedIn Learning, where we can enrol in any course and maintain our professional growth.

One of the best perks for me, though, is being able to participate in meet-ups, conferences and technical days. In our twice-yearly global Hackathon, for example, we have the chance to bring forward innovative ideas and collaborate with other people doing great jobs in their respective teams. It’s so rewarding to see our teamwork bring great ideas to life!
